How To Remove Carpet Stains

There are many factors that contribute to a clean apartment. However, one of the easiest ways to freshen up an entire living space is by removing unsightly stains from your carpets.

Pets, frequent visitors, or heavy foot traffic can all cause your carpets to slowly build up dark spots and stains. If you’re able to catch a stain quickly, try some of the tips in our quick clean list. If you’re removing a stain that’s set in, or dark spots from heavy foot traffic, skip to the deep clean section.

The Quick Clean

If you catch a spot or stain quickly, it’s much easier to remove, and you have more options. Resist the urge to scrub, as it pushes the material further into the carpet and makes it harder to remove.

  • Scrape off any remaining loose portions of the spill using the dull side of a butter knife. This helps to reduce the amount of liquid that gets into your carpet, and control the stain area.
  • Don’t scrub. Instead, use a paper towel or a clean cloth to gently dab and blot the area to absorb the liquid.
  • Mix some club soda with water, and pour it into the stained area to further dilute the liquid. Continue blotting.
  • If the stain still remains, add some liquid detergent into some water and gently scrub the area until the stain is removed.

The Deep Clean

If you have some old stains or heavy traffic areas, you will have to spend some more time and effort to clean your carpets, and you may not be able to remove the stains completely. When you mix the paste, test it in a hidden corner to make sure it won’t discolor the carpet.

  • Vacuum the carpet to remove dirt.
  • Mix a cup of baking soda with water in a bowl, and mix until pasty.
  • Apply the paste into the stain, and rub it into the carpet thoroughly.
  • Allow to sit for about 30 minutes.
  • Put a clean towel on the stain, and stack heavy books or a box on it for another 30 minutes.
  • By this time, most of the stain should have transferred from the carpet to the towel.
  • Use the vacuum to remove any lingering paste on the carpet.

Allow the carpet to dry, and check to see if the stains are successfully removed. If not, repeat the process a few more times. If you still cannot get the area clean, it may be time to rent a carpet cleaner, or hire a professional service.
